Superior: VRE3242 Outdoor Fireplace

A gas fireplace built for the patio, with no chimney to block the view.

Quick Facts

• Fuel: Natural gas or propane.
• Controls: Remote included.

Who It’s For

An outdoor kitchen or covered patio wants a fireplace, but a chimney blocks the view and wood means smoke and ash. You need a gas fire built for the weather. The Superior VRE3242 is for the outdoor living space that wants a 42-inch vent-free gas fireplace.

What Makes It Special

It comes with a charred oak ceramic fiber log set on a heavy stainless grate and burner with the gas valve concealed, with tall yellow flames.

Battery electronic ignition and a wireless on/off, high/low remote come with it. The face and every weather-exposed surface are 304 stainless steel, with refractory in stacked or herringbone. Superior backs it with a 20-year limited warranty.

Possible Downsides

• Check local codes. Vent-free rules vary, indoors and out.

If you want a fireplace on the patio without a chimney, the Superior VRE3242 is the right decision. The patio becomes the room everyone heads to after dinner.

Choose the refractory pattern and add the weather cover, hood, glass doors, or drain pan where offered.
