Who It’s For

A see-through fireplace solves one problem and creates another: both rooms get the fire, but the wall between them becomes a window, and not every evening wants one. You need a fireplace two rooms can share without giving up the wall between them. If you’re putting a fire in the wall between the dining room and the living room, and you want each side to control its own warmth and its own view, this is the one. Pick an ordinary see-through and you live with the window around the clock; pick a single-sided unit and one room gets drywall. The Napoleon CLEARion Elite gives you both rooms and the choice.

What Makes It Special

The glass itself is the feature. From the remote, Napoleon’s patented privacy glass shifts between fully transparent, semi-transparent, and fully opaque. Dinner party on one side, movie on the other: set the glass to opaque and each room keeps its own evening.

The heat splits the same way. Each room gets its own remote and independent heat control, so you can warm both rooms at once or just the one being used. It can be wired for standard household power or hardwired at 240 volts for double the heat output, and because it’s electric, there’s no chimney and no gas line to run.

Possible Downsides

• Full heat output requires a hardwired 240-volt connection; on a standard 120-volt connection the output is half.
• It’s zone heat, not whole-home heat—plan on it warming the rooms it faces while the furnace holds the rest of the house.
• Surrounds are optional accessories, not included in the box.
