Who It’s For

When the power goes out in winter, a fireplace that needs electricity to start is just a window. You need an insert that lights and heats without the grid. If outages are part of your winters, or you would simply rather have fewer electronics to service, the Kozy Heat Chaska 335S is built that way. An electronic-ignition insert depends on power or batteries to light; this one does not.

What Makes It Special

The 335S uses a standing pilot, so it lights and makes heat with no electricity at all. A small flame stays lit between fires, and a switch brings the burner up whenever you want it.

When the power is on, two fans push warm air out through the grilles above and below the glass, carrying heat across a large living room and into the next room.

The propane conversion kit comes in the box, and it is approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

• A small pilot flame burns around the clock, using a little gas unless you shut it off for the season.
• No remote in the box. Remotes and thermostats are add-ons.
• The two fans need power. In an outage the fire still heats, but the fans are not there to push the warm air out.

If you want an insert that keeps you warm no matter what the power is doing, the Chaska 335S is the right decision. The ice storm becomes a night by the fire instead of a night under blankets.
