Who It’s For

You want a straightforward, traditional wood stove for your living area. The HearthStone Green Mountain 40 is made for that. Pick a stove sized wrong and you either chase a cold room or cook yourself out of it.

What Makes It Special

The GM40 is styled with clean lines in traditional black cast iron, which HearthStone says is built for the wood stove purist.

It is lined with soapstone blocks that absorb the heat of the fire for long-lasting, comfortable heat.

HearthStone’s TruHybrid system adds a third, catalytic stage to primary and secondary combustion, for a burn clean enough that a roaring fire shows no visible smoke from the chimney and that surpasses the 2020 federal clean-air standards. You can still burn high and hot or low and slow.

Possible Downsides

• It is a wood fire. You load it, tend it, and carry out the ash.
• Logs are shorter. Up to 16 inches.

If you want steady, long-lasting wood heat, the HearthStone Green Mountain 40 is the right decision. On the coldest night, the house is warm and the fire is the reason.

Add the blower with rear heat shield and the outside air adapter.
