Hearthstone: Castleton

A clean, efficient soapstone stove with extra-long heat and one simple lever.

Quick Facts

• Heating Capacity: Up to 1,500 sq ft (HearthStone’s stated figure).
• Maximum Log Size: 18″
• HeatLife: 20 hours (how long you can still restart a fire from the coals with kindling).
• Fuel: Wood.

Who It’s For

You want soapstone heat for a medium-size space, without a stove that is fussy to run. The HearthStone Castleton is made for that. Pick a stove sized wrong and you either chase a cold room or cook yourself out of it.

What Makes It Special

The Castleton’s square firebox makes loading and arranging firewood easy, and a 3-tube secondary system with a fixed baffle cleans up the burn before the catalyst finishes it.

You run it with one lever: turn it to high and stoke a big fire, or all the way down to keep a fire burning overnight.

HearthStone’s TruHybrid system adds a third, catalytic stage to primary and secondary combustion, for a burn clean enough that a roaring fire shows no visible smoke from the chimney and that surpasses the 2020 federal clean-air standards. You can still burn high and hot or low and slow.

Possible Downsides

• It is a wood fire. You load it, tend it, and carry out the ash.

If you want steady, long-lasting wood heat, the HearthStone Castleton is the right decision. On the coldest night, the house is warm and the fire is the reason.

Choose matte black or brown or seafoam enamel, and add the rear heat shield, convection blower, and outside air adapter.
