Weathered oak logs from one lightning-struck tree, sized for a big fireplace.

Quick Facts

• Heating Capacity: Designed for ambiance, not as a heat source.

• Logs: 14 pieces, 48″

Who It’s For

A wood fireplace is wonderful on the nights you light it, but hauling wood, building the fire, and cleaning out ash turn it into a project, so it sits dark most of the winter. You need a fire that starts with a button and still looks like wood. The Grand Canyon Arizona Weathered Oak 48-inch set is for the homeowner with a working wood-burning fireplace, sized for a wide, large firebox, who wants the look of a real fire every evening. Gas logs are about the fire you see, not heat: choose them for ambiance, and choose a gas insert if you want the fireplace to warm the house.

What Makes It Special

Every log in the collection was gathered from one Northern Arizona oak hit by lightning more than 40 years ago, so the bulges, twisting, and cracking match across the whole fire.

The 48-inch set is fourteen logs. At 48 inches it runs on the 48-inch 2-burner pan, which Grand Canyon builds with the height of a 3-burner. Grand Canyon casts each log in high-temperature concrete with ceramic refractory and stainless-steel fiber mesh, then hand paints it. Logs installed indoors carry a lifetime warranty; logs installed outside carry a five-year warranty.

You choose how it lights when you choose the burner: an on-and-off remote, a remote that turns the flame up and down while a small pilot stays lit, battery ignition that lights the pilot only when you want a fire, or a simple manual valve.

Possible Downsides

• It is for ambiance, not heat. Most of the warmth goes up the chimney; for real heat, look at a gas insert.
• The burner is sold separately. Every set needs a matching 48-inch Grand Canyon burner.

If you want a real-looking wood fire without the wood, the Grand Canyon Arizona Weathered Oak 48-inch set is the right decision. The big fireplace finally holds a fire that looks like it belongs there.

Pair the logs with a 48-inch Grand Canyon 2-burner pan in natural gas or propane, and pick the control system that suits how you like to light a fire.
