Who It’s For

Some rooms were never built for a fire—the condo living room, the bedroom, the home office with one blank wall. So the wall that should hold a fire stays a blank wall. You need a fireplace that asks for nothing but an outlet. If you want a wide, modern flame you can build in, hang on the wall, or stand on a console, the Dimplex Sierra 60 is that fireplace: five feet of flame with real heat behind it, in rooms a gas line will never reach.

What Makes It Special

The Sierra 60 installs three ways: recessed into the wall, hung on the wall, or standing on its included feet on a console or tabletop. Whichever you pick, it plugs into a standard household outlet—no gas line, no chimney. Build it in and plan on finish work like any built-in; hang it or stand it and installation is mostly deciding where it goes.

The look is yours to change. Three media beds come in the box—logs, pebbles, and crystals—and the flames and ember bed light separately, with multiple flame color themes and eight ember bed colors to rotate through. Run the flames without the heat and it earns its place in July as well as January; the glass stays cool to the touch, so kids and pets are fine right up close.

When you do want warmth, the fan-forced ceramic heater covers up to 1,000 square feet—enough to carry the main living area on its own or take the edge off while the furnace holds a baseline. Set the timer for up to eight hours and let it shut itself off.

Possible Downsides

• It needs household power to run; in an outage there is no flame and no heat—if outage heating matters, look at gas or wood.
• The warranty is one year (limited) on electrical components.

If you want a real focal-point fire in a room that can’t take a chimney or a gas line, the Sierra 60 is the right decision. The room it’s in becomes the room the house lives in.

Beyond the three included media beds, the Sierra 60 takes optional tumbled glass, river rock, black rock, and clear acrylic crystal ember beds, plus driftwood, beach driftwood, and thin split faux-wood log sets, so the fire can match the room you already have.
