Who It’s For
The wall where you want a fire has no gas line and no chimney—and it might not be indoors at all. You’ve pictured a long ribbon of flame in the living room or out on the covered patio, and every option seems to involve a major project. You need a fire that asks nothing of the wall but electricity. If you’re after a dramatic six-foot fire—ambiance first, comfort heat second—for an indoor wall or a sheltered outdoor space, the Ignite XL 74 is the one. Pick a standard electric linear and it stays indoors; this one is built to live outside too.
What Makes It Special
The difference is stamped right on the label: the Ignite XL is certified for outdoor use. Sheltered under a porch roof or patio overhang, it brings the full fire outside—the same flames on a July night as a January afternoon—and it’s backed by a 5-year limited warranty indoors, 1-year outdoors.
The fire itself is Dimplex’s Multi-Fire flame effect: LED flames layered with color you can tune by hand or set to one of seven presets, over a bed of acrylic crystals. An ambient light sensor reads the room and adjusts the firebox brightness to match—easy on the eyes at midnight, still vivid at noon. And because the unit recesses fully into the wall, the glass runs edge to edge with nothing protruding into the room.
Living with it is simple. Run flame without heat on summer evenings, or flame and heat together when it’s cold, with a thermostat that holds the room where you set it. Comfort$aver technology trims energy use while keeping the temperature steady, and the timer shuts things down on its own.
Possible Downsides
• Comfort heat for one room, not a primary heat source; it warms the space it’s in, up to 500 sq ft.
• Full heat output requires dedicated 240-volt hardwiring; on a standard 120-volt connection it runs at a lower output and warms a smaller area.
• Outdoor installs carry a 1-year warranty (5 years indoors) and must sit under an overhang, sheltered from direct rain.
If you want a six-foot fire on a wall—or a patio—that a gas line could never reach, the Ignite XL 74 is the right decision. The patio you close up every October becomes the room everyone ends up in.
The included acrylic crystal ember bed can be swapped for tumbled glass, river rocks, or black rocks; driftwood, beach driftwood, and thin split log sets dress the fire further; and a matching 74-inch trim kit is available for partially recessed installs.
