Who It’s For

Some rooms were never built for fire—no chimney, no gas line, and no easy way to add either. So the wall where a fireplace belongs stays blank. You need a full-size fireplace that runs on the wiring you already have. If you want a built-in fire in a bedroom, basement, family room, or condo, the Dimplex BF Series 45 is the one. Plan around a wood or gas unit instead and the project grows a chimney and a gas line before it grows a fire.

What Makes It Special

Most electric fireplaces look electric. This one reads as a built-in wood fire from across the room: a 3D flame effect plays over mirrored rear glass, cast logs glow from the inside, the ember bed pulses like live coals, and operable mesh spark screens slide across the front the way they would on a masonry hearth.

The flame runs with or without heat, so the fire works in July as well as January—flame-only costs pennies a night. When you want warmth, the fan-forced heater pushes it into the room through a louver-less face, so nothing on the front says appliance.

Because it’s electric, there’s no chimney and no gas line—it hardwires into the house at 120V or 240V and builds into a framed wall, so plan on an electrician and finish work as part of the job.

Possible Downsides

• It’s a one-room warmer—electric heats the room it’s in, not the house.
• Glass doors and surround trim are sold separately; the bi-fold-look door, tamper-proof glass front, and trim kit are all optional extras.
• Direct-wire by design; a plug kit for a standard 120V outlet is a separate accessory.

If you want a full-size fire on a wall that can’t take a chimney, the BF Series 45 is the right decision. The room with the blank wall becomes the room everyone ends up in.
